My Love ...My Art
And... one last... but fairly significant point that I get asked about quite a lot: YES I shoot FILM. I love film. I love the magic of it, the softness of it, the amazing color and depth that it has. For this reason, I do get a lot of fellow artists and designer types as clients. Sometimes it doesn’t even come up...if you like a portfolio, then it really doesn’t matter how the photographer gets to the end product, but I occasionally I’ll have potential brides ask: what is different about your work. It looks so natural. And 9 times out of ten, I tell them.... it’s because I shoot film.
There is a definite change in approach when one shoots film. The enchantment is that you never know exactly what you capture ...and that remains to this day, one of the most exciting attributes to me. The sheer anticipation of getting the images back and being surprised, it’s unlike anything else I know. It creates a mystery for your clients too, and you get to interact with your subjects, not with your camera’s LCD screen. I can’t tell you how often I see digital shooters looking at their cameras seconds after taking a photo. I think this distraction actually pulls you out of the creative moment.
Film gives me a wide exposure latitude to work with. It handles back light subjects without blowing out the highlights. This peace of mind is great with the constantly changing light during a wedding. I only shoot on manual so that I have complete control. You cannot match the look of film shooting digital, it’s just different.
